What makes G+ the "killer app" for me:
I have over three hundred "friends" on Facebook, most of whom are indeed friends; folks I've worked with in the recording studio, shared gigs with onstage, woodworking and construction clients, and folks and family I simply feel comfortable interacting with no matter the medium.
Very few that I'm aware of are remotely interested in woodworking, both a livelihood, and a passion of mine.
What I like so much about G+ is that, while most of the folks in my growing G+ "woodworking" circle are complete strangers, folks whom I wouldn't recognize in a restaurant, we, to a man/woman, share a common interest that is bolstered by an effortless ability to interact by sharing media rich content with far fewer limitations than previously possible.
There are other forums, both web based and text (nntp/usenet) that provide interaction with like-minded individuals, but none that make the experience so "rich" ... this potential is subtle, and much greater than meets the eye with casual exposure to G+; and also difficult to get across to those who see social networking as nothing more than "tweets" in life.
Not surprising, the first to recognize this appear to be the techno/geek crowd and photographers... AAMOF, my initial thought on first logging in to G+ (after wrangling an invitation from a total stranger in the Philippines, no less), was that blogging is being set up to become a thing of the past right before our very eyes. :)
I keep hearing from FB friends that everyone on G+ is a stranger; and I keep explaining to them that so were we at one time. That fact does nothing to detract from the potential for satisfying interaction with likeminded individuals.
Content enabled interaction ... magic words.
Of this friendships are made.
